INSIDE THE LEDGER LAFAYE'I-rE NICOLLET LEDGER August 19, 2010, Page 3 County's outstanding senior citizens, farm family, Century and Sesquicentennial Farms recognized at Nicollet County Fair in honor and appreciation of devoted service to others and to the commu- nity. Mary Myhra and Ellery Peter- son, both of St. Peter, received Dis- tinguished Service Awards. It was a big week for Webster as just one day earlier, she received the Service to Seniors Award at the Brown County Fair. Webstter volunteers as a health insuranc,e counselor and Senior by Ruth Klossner Three Nicollet County senior cit- izens, the county's Farm Family of the Year, five Centennial Farms, and three Sesquicentennial Farms were recognized during a special awards program at the Nicollet County Fair Friday. Sally Webster of Bernadotte Township was named Nicollet County's Outstanding Senior Citizen Linkage volunteer with the Min- nesota River Area Agency on Aging. She is one of the founders of the Health Insurance Counseling Pro- gram in Minnesota and started the program in this area. She coordinates monthly health insurance counseling sites at the local senior center and makes house calls to those who are homebound. She volunteers 20 to 40 hours a month, working with Medicare beneficiaries, saving both them and the federal government thousands of dollars. She also speaks monthly on the KNUJ Radio Com- munity Affairs program about Medicare. Sally is also active with the Nicollet County Historical Society, Winthrop Area Community Founda- tion, Nicollet County Committee on Aging, Lafayette/Winthrop Good Samaritan Center, Lafayette Ameri- can Legion Auxiliary, Lafayette Lions Club, and Bernadotte Lutheran Church. In making the presentation, Nicollet County Senior Coordinator Sylvia Perron stated, "Sally truly is an exceptional lady and has devoted her time on earth to improving the lives of those around her." Myhra has donated over 4,700 hours of volunteer service to the Benedictine Living Community over the last seven years. She visits with Meet the Schroeders. Since Peter- son was out of state for a wedding, his award was accepted by his daughter, Kathy Wilking of Nicollet, center. residents, assists with the bell choir and special events, and embroiders hundreds of dish towels for the resi- dents' gift shop. She is an RSVP vol- unteer, helps the Chamber of Com- merce, was the needlework chairman at the county fair, is a member of the senior pfeffer group, and volunteers at Scandian Grove Lutheran Church where she is a member. The staff of the Benedictine Liv- ing Community who nominated Myhra stated, "Mary provides caring conversation, compassionate listen- ing, and helping hands for our resi- dents. She is definitely an outstand- ing senior volunteer." Peterson is the program commit- tee chairperson for Kiwanis, collects books for needy children, rings the Salvation Army bells at Christmas, and has volunteered at many Kiwa- nis fundraising events. He is a past St. Peter councilman, mayor, and interim city manger. He's a former professor at Gustavus Adolphus Col- lege and continues to be involved at the college, is a past president of the St. Peter Rotary Club and the Cham- ber of Commerce, and has served on the council and various committees at First Lutheran Church. "Ellery is truly an outstanding volunteer who has made very signifi- cant positive changes for people in his community," nominator Richard Helgeson of the Kiwanis Club stat- ed. The Schroeder family of Court- land Township was honored as Nicollet County's Farm Family of the Year in the program sponsored by the county fair and the University of Minnesota. The family consists of John and Beverly Schroeder, their son and daughter-in-law Jason and Michele, and grandson Alex. Son Tim and daughter Melissa also help on the farm as they can. The family was also honored by the University of Minnesota at Farm- festa week earlier. (The Schroeders' family farm was featured in the July 29 Ledger.) Recognized for achieving Centu- ry Farm status were Harold Luepke of Brighton Township, Bill and Barb Schwab of West Newton Township, the Sjogren Family of Lafayette Township, Robert Wilkinson of Tra- verse Township, and Laura Kral of Lafayette Township. Representatives of the first four families attended the event. They had received special Centennial Farm certificates and farm signs earlier. (Watch for feature stories on the Century Farms in future issues of the Ledger.) Three 150-year-old farms were also recognized during the program. Signs signifying the sesquicentennial honor were presented by Garfield Eckberg of the Nicollet County Farm Bureau. Recognized were the farms of Don and Laurie Webster of New Sweden Township, Herbert and John Poncin of Traverse Township, and Terry Pankratz of Lake Prairie Township. All attended the pro- gram. Congratu- lations on your many years of marriage and may you have many more. Many people from the area at- tended the Nicollet and Brown County Fairs this past weekend. There was no shortage of things to see and do this weekend. The Courtland f'wemen held their annual street dance Saturday. The evening street dance was held at the fire hall with the band "69 Cents" playing. Many enjoyed dancing to their music. In the aftemoon, the "older" group en- joyed old time music played by Leon Olson in the air-conditioned Commu- nity Center. A delicious hog roast lunch was also served. It is great to come out and support our lal fire department because the fu'efighters are always there to support us in so many ways. Dian Fasse of New Ulm was hon- ored at the Brown County Fair last Thursday. Dian received the 2010 Service to Seniors Award. She has been director of the CAST (Community and Seniors Together) program the past 11 years and will retire at the end of Au- gust. Dian was a former teacher at Im- manuel Lutheran School, rural Courtland. Enjoy your retirement, Dian.
